The Fish Flop

FINALIST project

Stella Brecker, Saffron Zeff

The Fish Flop is a Hamptons-based project that creates biodegradable flip-flops designed to leave no toxins or microplastics behind. The shoe’s cork-like base is made from blended phragmites stems—an invasive plant harming local shorelines—offering a dual solution: wetland restoration and sustainable footwear. A glycerin and alginate mixture coats the sole and forms the straps, making the entire product compostable. With a fish skeleton logo stamped on the bottom, the flip-flops leave playful prints in the sand while spreading awareness about biodesign. The Fish Flop turns an environmental problem into a regenerative product that highlights the impact of mindful, everyday choices.
